Sandeshkhali Case: Sheikh Shahjahan suspended for six years by TMC

Sheikh Shahjahan, the primary suspect in the Sandeshkhali case, where several women were sexually harassed for days and had their land taken, was suspended by the Trinamool Congress on Thursday. Shahjahan’s six-year ban from the party was declared by the party shortly after his detention by the West Bengal Police.

Three days after the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court issued an order to include Sheikh Shahjahan in the Sandeshkhali case, the arrest took place. The Calcutta High Court Justice requested to issue a notice in the matter on February 26 and stated, “There is no reason not to arrest him.” The decision was made one day prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned trip to West Bengal

Several women in Sandeshkhali, in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, have been participating in large-scale rallies against Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh. These women are demanding justice for what they believe to be crimes perpetrated by the TMC politician. The politician, who has been evading capture since January 5, has a history of involvement in many criminal cases, including the 2019 murder of three BJP employees. Shajahan had been holed up at a home in Bamanpukur, near the Minakhan police station, around thirty km from the edge of the Sunderbans, close to the island of Sandeshkhali.

According to a police official, he was located using the tower location on his mobile phone. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) is in charge of looking into the claims made against Shajahan Sheikh, the now-arrested Sandeshkhali accused person. “This is the beginning of an end. We have to put an end to the cycle of violence in Bengal. In parts of Bengal, the goons are ruling the roost. This must end and the gangsters should be put behind bars,” stated the governor of Bengal at a press conference, quoted news agency PTI.
