ISIS India Head Arrested Near Assam Border

Haris Ajmal Farooqi, the alleged head of ISIS in India, was apprehended along with an associate near the international border in Assam’s Dhubri district. The arrest was made following their crossing over from Bangladesh on Wednesday, as confirmed by Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officials on Thursday.

Farooqi, a former student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), was reportedly in direct communication with the Aligarh module of the terror organization, according to UP ATS authorities. They disclosed that Farooqi was an active member of the SAMU’s instant messaging group, where he provided instructions to other members.

The ATS is set to dispatch a team to Assam to serve a warrant against Farooqi in the case filed against him at the Lucknow ATS police station. Seeking his custody remand, the ATS aims to delve deeper into Farooqi’s involvement with the Aligarh module and his connections with other members operating in Uttar Pradesh and beyond.

Earlier revelations from Assam police unveiled that Farooqi was arrested alongside another prominent figure in ISIS in India, identified as Anurag Singh alias Rehan. Singh, a resident of Haryana’s Panipat, reportedly embraced Islam, while his wife hailed from Bangladesh. Both individuals are described as highly motivated leaders/members of ISIS in India, implicated in various activities, including recruitment, terror funding, and planning attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

“They had furthered the cause of ISIS in India through conspiracies to carry out recruitment, terror funding, and terror acts by means of IEDs at several places across India,” stated an official familiar with the matter.

The arrest of Farooqi and Singh underscores the ongoing efforts of security forces to dismantle terrorist networks operating within the country and prevent potential threats to national security.

Authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation and coordination among law enforcement agencies to counter the menace of terrorism effectively.
