Severe Weather Strikes North India and Pakistan: Avalanches, Snowfall, and Flooding Cause Casualties

A western disturbance caused severe weather over parts of north India, the Himalayan region, and neighboring Pakistan, where at least 37 people died in rain-related incidents. Avalanches hit several parts of Himachal Pradesh, heavy spells of snow blocked key roads in Jammu and Kashmir, and rainfall accompanied by lightning lashed parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

The present western disturbance (WD), according to meteorologists, is the strongest of the season. It is expected to be followed by a second one that is expected to hit the Western Himalayan region on March 5 and continue to cause rain until March 11.

This is the same western disturbance that brought heavy snowfall and fatalities to Pakistan. It might possibly have had negative effects in Afghanistan. According to M. Mohapatra, director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this was the most severe WD of the season.

The system’s influence was striking in the extent to which it was felt: Four lightning strikes in Uttar Pradesh are claimed to have resulted in deaths, according to a senior official.
