Principal’s Social Media Stand Sparks Controversy: Refuses Resignation Amidst School Management Uproar

The principal of Mumbai’s Somaiya School, Parveen Shaikh, has reportedly been asked by the school management to resign following her social media activity regarding the Palestine-Israel conflict. Shaikh, who has been associated with the school for 12 years and served as its principal for 7 years, has refused to resign, stating that she has given her all to the organization.

The decision came after a report published by web portal OpIndia on April 24 highlighted Shaikh’s likes and comments on pro-Palestine and sympathetic to Hamas posts on her X handle. Following the publication, Shaikh was called in by the management on April 26, where they expressed that her association with the school was no longer tenable and requested her resignation.

Despite pressure from the management, Shaikh has chosen not to resign, emphasizing her commitment to the organization and her right to freedom of speech. She maintains that she was not aware of the web portal or the report until the management informed her about it. Shaikh also noted that there is no formal policy regarding political remarks on social media for employees of the Somaiya institution.

In response, the school management stated that they were unaware of Shaikh’s sentiments until the report was brought to their notice on April 24. They expressed disagreement with her views and stated that they are looking into the matter further.

Meanwhile, some parents of students at the school have voiced their support for Shaikh, citing her integrity, professionalism, and positive impact on the school’s growth. They emphasized that her personal views on certain subjects should not affect her role as a principal.
