Farmers Back for ‘Delhi Chalo’: Security on High Alert

Returning to Delhi, protesting farmers plan to fight for their demands, which include minimum price guarantees for their produce. The police have responded by stepping up security at the borders with Punjab and Haryana. The two umbrella organisations spearheading the farmers’ demonstrations, the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), have invited farmers from all over the nation to join them in the nation’s capital today.

Farmers and agricultural labourers from neighbouring states have been requested to travel to Delhi today, as farmers from Punjab and Haryana persist in their protests at the border crossings of Shambhu and Khanauri. The federal government was presented with requests that included no increase in power rates, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, a formal guarantee of MSP for crops, and a forgiveness of agricultural debt.

The leader of the farming community Sarwan Singh Pandher claims that the central government is not paying attention to farmers’ demands for the Minimum Support Price (MSP). “They (the centre) should make it clear what their position is on MSP,” the speaker declared. Pandher further claims that Punjab has suffered economic losses as a result of the protest-related closure of the border with Haryana, and he casts doubt on the Center’s involvement in this issue.

He questions the need for the 70,000 paramilitary soldiers stationed in Haryana as well as the threat the state’s residents pose to the federal government. The farmers’ leader underlines that more people are seeing the protests every day and that by March 10th, things need to be more clear.
