Haryana’s Pragati Rani Triumphs UPSC Exam Despite Challenges

Pragati Rani from Kurukshetra, Haryana, has secured the 355th rank in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam. This achievement marks a significant improvement from her previous attempt, setting her on the path to becoming an IAS officer.

A 31-year-old radiologist, Rani embarked on her UPSC journey when her son Rajvardhan was just six months old. She persevered with the unwavering support of her husband, Dr. Atul Verma, despite the challenges of balancing motherhood and her career.

“I used to prepare for the civil services from my home itself. Juggling between studying and motherhood, I maximised my study hours when Rajvardhan slept at around 9.30 pm,” Rani shared with The Indian Express.

Rani’s dedication saw her not only clear the UPSC exam twice but also secure the second rank in the Haryana civil services exam. In the 2022-23 UPSC exam, she secured the 740th rank and had the option to join the DANICS cadre. However, she chose to stay closer to home and joined the Haryana civil services.

After training, Rani assumed the role of an officer on special duty to the Ambala divisional commissioner in November 2023. Despite her responsibilities, she continued her preparations, facing the added challenge of a more aware and demanding three-year-old.

Offering advice to UPSC aspirants, Rani emphasized the need for consistency and a balanced approach. “This exam requires consistent studies of two years. Candidates should take care of their health and find a balance between preparation and life,” she advised.

Rani attributes her success to the values instilled by her parents. Her father, Naresh Verma, a school teacher, taught her humility, while her mother, Sushil Verma, a nurse, stressed the importance of education. “My mother gave me the wings to think big,” Rani expressed gratefully.

Married to Dr. Atul Verma for five years, Rani credits him for encouraging her to pursue her civil services dream. Her mother-in-law, Kamlesh Verma, and father-in-law, R C Verma, a former IAS officer, have been pillars of support throughout her journey.
