Matt Hu, a Software Engineer at Google for the past two years, shared his experience of the fateful evening. Hailing from China and residing in the US on an H-1B visa, Hu detailed how he and his girlfriend enjoyed a home-cooked meal and TV before he prepared for an interview. However, upon opening his laptop at 9:00 PM, he received an ominous email regarding a “StopInstance operation,” triggering alarm bells.
Describing the ensuing moments as agonizing, Hu recounted losing access to various platforms and receiving a notification titled “Notice regarding your employment,” signifying the abrupt end of his tenure at Google. Further communication with coworkers revealed that several others were also affected, including Hu’s manager, who had been with Google for nearly 13 years.
As Hu and his colleagues grappled with the shock and uncertainty, he noted the profound impact on the team, with half of them being let go. Despite the upheaval, Hu praised his manager’s professionalism and shared words of encouragement exchanged within the team.
