Punjab records more deaths than injuries in road accidents in 2021 and 2022: NCRB data

In 2021 and 2022, road accidents in Punjab resulted in more deaths than injuries, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. In 2022 alone, 6,122 road accidents in Punjab led to 4,688 fatalities and 3,372 injuries. The preceding year saw 6,097 accidents, causing 4,516 deaths and 3,034 injuries.
Contrastingly, Haryana witnessed a higher number of injuries than deaths despite a rise in both figures. In 2021, 10,049 accidents were reported, resulting in 4,983 deaths and 7,972 injuries. In 2022, the accidents increased to 10,654, with 5,228 deaths and 8,353 injuries.

Pedestrian and cyclist casualties:

The report highlights pedestrian and cyclist fatalities as noteworthy. In 2022, Haryana recorded 1,164 pedestrian deaths and 1,663 injuries, surpassing Punjab’s 609 deaths and 241 injuries. Cyclist casualties were also higher in Punjab, with 215 deaths and 112 injuries, compared to Haryana’s 114 deaths and 120 injuries.
Both states reported significant injuries and fatalities among two-wheeler riders. In 2022, Haryana witnessed 2,182 two-wheeler rider deaths and 3,420 injuries, while Punjab reported 2,099 deaths and 1,663 injuries. To address the issue, the Punjab government plans to establish the Sadak Surakhya Force, a specialized unit within the Punjab Police, focusing on traffic management and accident prevention on national and state highways.
